Encounters With Evan

I will often refer to Evan as “My Little Guy”. Truth be told, there is not much small about him. He has a booming voice and a deep heart full of huge laughs. He constantly demonstrates a desire and ability to approach even the smallest of tasks with intense passion. He inspires me to be a better Dad to/for him on a daily basis.

***A few weeks ago Evan and I were sitting in a café area together. A boy walked up to our table and proceeded to have a conversation with Evan. Beyond passing pleasantries, the two of them exchanged laughs and topics for about five solid minutes. By this point, I just assumed this visitor was an acquaintance of Evan from baseball, church, or maybe even a classmate from school. Either way, I was simply enjoying a moment to watch my son be himself. Their exchange finished with Evan saying…..”OK, it’s been nice talking with you”, and the young boy walking away with a smile. Then, proceeding to cup his hands to his mouth, as if to tell me a secret, Evan said to me….”Dad, I have no idea who that was”

***Over the past few days Evan mentioned he has been receiving money in the mail as birthday gifts, from various friends and family. At dinner one night, I asked him what he intended to do with his recent financial windfall. His immediate response……”Probably buy a few things for my friends”

***To watch Evan play baseball is to see the epitome of a teammate in action. No matter where his name is written on the lineup card, he never fails to make significant contributions. From countless clutch defensive plays, to his booming vocal encouragement, he is valued by all those around him. You will always be well served to call Evan over to your side when choosing up teams.

Evan: I know the ethos of “With great power comes great responsibility” is not lost on you. Well, I am here to remind you of how powerful you are. You have the ability to make others feel loved. You have the power to create laughter. You make everyone around you feel welcomed and wanted. More than creating content, Evan….you ARE the content. You will surely make your chosen communities a better place in the years ahead. Be truthful to your creator, and pass along the love that has been given to you.
